Domain Pointers

A domain pointer (also known as a "domain alias") is a domain name that simply mirrors another domain name in every way. Web traffic to a domain pointer is presented with the exact same site as the domain name it is pointing to. All e-mail to the domain pointer is routed to the domain name it points to. Any FTP connections to a domain pointer connect to the same server as the domain it points to.

Domain pointers are typically used for .net, .org, and .ca domain names to point to a .com domain name. For example, John has a domain name, johndoe.com but people have been trying to access his site at johndoe.net. So John sets up a domain pointer johndoe.net to johndoe.com. Now johndoe.net looks exactly the same as johndoe.com and his visitors can e-mail him at @johndoe.net and it is delivered to his respective @johndoe.com e-mail addresses.
